Preheat oven to 300F.
In a large oven-proof dish, add items in layers; one row of pastry, one row of meat sprinkle with salt and pepper, one row of chopped onions, one row of pastry.
Add some water (or stock). Repeat layers and end with one row of pastry. Before putting in the oven, add some water (or stock). Bake 3-5 hours or until done.
