Makes 12 servings
Ingredients
Custard:
3 cups milk
5 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla
Trifle:
1 dark chocolate cake (mix)
1/3 cup Kirsch or 1 tsp. mint flavoring with 1/3 cup apple juice
1 can cherry pie filling
Decorations:
1 cup whipping cream
2 tablespoons icing sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
Garnish:
Chocolate curls
Instructions for Trifle
Custard: Heat milk until bubbles form around the edge. In heavy saucepan, beat egg yolks with sugar and cornstarch until smooth. Whisk in milk slowly. Cook over medium heat, stirring until thickened, 3-5 minutes. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Let cool.
Press waxed paper or plastic wrap onto surface, refrigerate for up to 2 days.
Trifle:
Bake and cool chocolate cake.
Break cake into chunks. Arrange in bottom of 14-cup trifle bowl. Drizzle with liqueur and spoon in cherries along the side of bowl. Spoon in custard. Cover and refrigerate up to 1 day.
Decorations: Whip cream with icing sugar, add vanilla. Spread over top. Garnish with chocolate curls or grated chocolate

Hint: May substitute canned vanilla pudding for custard.
