Cranberry Squares

Ingredients
Crumb mixture:
1 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
4 cups rolled oats

Filling:
2 cups of cranberries
½ cup water
1 cup sugar
Cornstarch mixed with a bit of cold water

Instructions
Crumb mixture:
Mix ingredients well.

Filling:
Cook cranberries, water, and sugar. Stiffen with cornstarch mixed with a bit of cold water.

In a 9 X 13 pan place one half the rolled oat mixture. Spread the cooked cranberries on one half of the rolled oats mixture. Top with the remaining oat mixture. Cook at 350 for about 30 minutes.

Variation:
Date Squares:
Replace the cranberries in the above recipe with dates.  Cook 1 lb. dates in ½ cup of water; add ½-cup sugar.
