1 apple, cut in half
3 cinnamon sticks

Hint:
Use what you have and like.
Other ingredients to add to the mix:  tea, 1 tsp fresh ginger, 1 tsp cardamon pods, 1/4 tsp dried orange peel, nutmeg, lemon slices and/or cranberries.

Pomander Ball Instructions
Take a firm orange and make holes in the orange peel with a metal skewer or nail. Make a pattern with the holes such as lines. Pre-punched holes makes it easy to put the cloves in the orange. Once the cloves are inserted, roll studded orange in cinnamon. The more cloves the less likely the orange will get moldy. Place each studded orange in tissue paper and store them in a paper bag in a dark and warm place for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, throw away any oranges that have mold.

Pomanders are now ready to display. Add ribbons to your liking.

After one year the oranges will shrink quite a bit.  Remove the ribbons and rearrange them so all the ribbons are snug. You will only need to do this once when they are about one year old.

After many years or when the smell is gone, reroll pomanders in more cinnamon.

Pomanders need cinnamon to keep away mold. When you plan on throwing them away after Christmas, you don't need to use cinnamon.
